Black Grrrls Rock: That Babe Gabe

Happy Black History Month! In honor of Black History Month, I decided to start a new series: Black Grrrls Rock! Black Grrrls Rock focuses on featuring and celebrating black female creatives. When I first came up with the series, I knew I wanted to feature That Babe Gabe. I first discovered Gabe through BLACKSTARKIDS a few years back, and was obsessed with how fun and bright their music was. I was lucky enough to them open for Coin back in 2022 and fell in love with Gabes energy on stage and overall aesthetic. Ever since then, I’ve been a massive fan of her music, personal style and origionality. I’m incredibly honored for Gabe to be the first Black Grrrls Rock Q&A!

How did you get into music?

I always found music to be fun and exciting at a very young age. I would listen to all the albums my parents had in their CD Collection at the time. My dad also had a lot of music equipment from his days as an artist and I would get to play around with it often. I remember he had this microphone and amp and I made it a priority to sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ every night. I would also make up dance routines to my favorite songs and show them to my parents. I’ve always wanted to be a performer on stage.

How would u characterize black starkids genre?

I don’t think there is any way to characterize BLACKSTARKIDS honestly. We want to explore and tackle so many different genres and that’s what I love about my bandmates. I feel BLACKSTARKIDS will be able to make music forever because we’re always inspired by new things; especially when it comes to music.

Who and what are ur style inspirations?

A lot of my style inspiration comes from what I’m into at the time. I watch a lot of TV, movies, and play a lot of video games. I take inspiration from all these things whenever I’m picking out clothes. But I also look up to people like Janet Jackson and Kelis when it comes to fashion.

How does being a black woman impact your creative expression?

I feel like being a black woman makes me want to go as hard as possible when it comes to expressing myself creatively. It’s extremely important to me that I help represent the woman who not only look up to me but look like me. Black women go through so many struggles and I want to make sure we’re heard and seen whenever I’m expressing myself. By being my authentic self I know I’ll be able to make an impact and hopefully pave the way for young black girls in the future and the black women in our current time

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

My favorite thing about myself is how hard-working I am. Me always wanting to get better and learn has gotten me so far and I can’t wait to see where it’ll get me in the future. Also how cute I am : )

What advice do you have for young black creatives?

My advice for young black creatives is to get up and get started immediately in whatever you want to do. You’re capable of so much and your impact means the world to people who look like us. Continue to work on those ideas and dream bigger than ever because it all pays off. Also, find a group of people who trust and build with them. You don’t have to do any of this alone. It’s a lot more fun with friends.
