Music
DOGTOOTH, Tyler The Creator
Tyler the creator in his munch era, what’s not to like (bonus points for the Loiter Squad reference)
Simmer Down, Foushee
Foushee is one of the most talented artists out there right now. If you don’t recognize her from her own music, you might have hears her on Steve Lacy’s latest album. This song is everything I love, an unapologetic blend of punk and hip-hop with fierce energy.
LOVESTORY, Bladee
This song is my personal equivalent of a lullaby. I find Bladee incredibly soothing.
Honey, Drug Dealer and Weyes Blood
As a longtime Weyes Blood fan, I love her voice on this song, and the overall classic soft, /folk-rock vibe
Call This # Now, The Garden
I am so in love with Fletcher Shears. That aside, this song itches a scratch in my brain that makes me walk 10xs faster to class
Mazel Tron, BLP Kosher and BabyTron
Just a solid, fun, banger full of crazy bars. Shout out to BLP Kosher for being one of the only white rappers to use “cracker” like the n-word in his songs.
Wigwam, Bob Dylan
I was a certified Bob Dylan hater until a few months ago, now this is my favorite song to read on the subway while pretending I’m the token black character in a Wes Anderson movie.
Fire In Cairo, The Cure
Because I have a certified cool mom, I was raised on The Cure. This song makes me so happy and nostalgic, plus I love how British-ly Robert Smith spells ‘C-a-i-r-o’.
TV/Movies
Succession season 4
My best friend Maya and I watch Succession every Sunday night together on my bed. I lovingly refer to this habit as our “suck-session”. I highly suggest Succession to everyone– It’s rich white people being messy with sarcastic dialogue. But you don’t need me to convince you to watch this critically acclaimed show, the real thing that makes me love our suck-sessions is Maya. I am a horrible person to watch Succession with. Somehow, when watching Succession, I turn into the combination of a pretentious film bro spitting out facts about how certain scenes are one shot, shot on film, or how the characters parallel each other. Combined with a stan Twitter femcel who is willing to forgive Mattson as an Elon Musk insert just because he’s played by the 6’4 Swedish god that is Alexandar Skarsgard. She tolerates me yelling ‘SLAY’ at billionaire business executives who are consistently screwing over the working class.
Hi octane
I love Sofia Coppola. She’s the ultimate 90s cool-girl nepobaby. The crux of everything I love about Sofial Coppola is her short-lived Comedy Central series Hi-Octane. This show has everything, Sofia Coppola and Zoe Cassavetes, cool cars, guest stars like Nicholas Cage and Keanu Reeves, and Thurston Moore interviewing people in alleys. There are only 3 episodes available online, but I treasure them all. My favorite bit from this show is when Zoe and Sophia (clad in iconic Chanel skirt suit sets) interview the Beastie Boys as their undercover cop characters from the music video Sabotage.
Banshees of Inesherin
Good old-fashioned Irish men being messy. This movie is not only shot beautifully, and a fascinating character study of masculinity in friendships, but it’s incredibly funny. Collin Farrel’s performance reminded me why he’s one of my favorite actors, and how important eyebrows are when it comes to an incredible performance. One of my favorite bits of this film is the animals.
Popstar: Never Stop Stopping
I LOVE comedy, but the film bro in me rarely lets me fully enjoy comedies, especially fairly recent ones. Luckily, the brilliance of Lonely Island overpowers my pretension. The celebrity cameos never cease to surprise and delight me. Also, every song is a certified banger that I listen to an embarrassing amount of times unironically. Also, Andy Samberg is so boyfriend.
Books
Kathy Acker in Seattle, Simone de Beauvoir
I revisit this book every time I think I wish I were from somewhere cooler, like New York. I love Kathy Acker as a writer and as the impetus behind the formation of Bikini Kill. I love the sense of nostalgia for an era of Seattle I wasn’t around for. I highly richmond this book for anyone who is interested in feminist literature, or the PNW feminist punk scene.
A woman destroyed, daniel schulz
This book made me feel so cool whenever I read it on the subway. You’ve probably seen it all over Pinterest, or in every cool girl femcels “What’s in my tote bag” tik tok, but I highly recommend it. It was the perfect blend of captivating, insightful, and depressing, perfectly capturing the female experience, particularly as it comes to aging.
ALL ABOUT LOVE, bell hooks
This book fully speaks for itself. bell hooks is a genius, and as a hopeless romantic, I love her analysis of love.
Other
anxiety grlz
This is one of my favorite zines right now. This zine is a super fun blend of nostalgia, modern pop culture, and coming of age. I definitely recommend you check them out.
Hivemind
I think Hivemind is hilarious, the banter between Riley, Grayden, and Dignan is perfect, and they are masters of bits and one-liners. The main focus of the show is very r/hiphop, but even non-music nerds will appreciate the game aspect of the show and the pop culture references.
minecraft
At least 3 times a year I go through a phase where I yearn for Minecraft. I desperately need to play it. Embarrassingly, my console of choice is my iPad, which doesn’t help me beat the iPad baby allegations. Regardless, there’s something so nostalgic and soothing about Minecraft. Consider it healing my inner child.
sonny angels
I have always loved trinkets, and Sonny Angels are my current trinket of choice. Just like their slogan claims, these little naked baby dolls bring me so much happiness. I bring one everywhere I go like it’s a good luck charm or a comfort item. If you need more convincing or want more info about Sonny Angels, check out my profile on Sonny Angel Collector Erika Saito (@bigappleangels). =
